Engeye strives to maximize donor fund utilization for furthering its mission by keeping overhead at a minimum. All US-based staff members are volunteers and Engeye has no physical offices outside of Ddegeya Village, Uganda.

We share organizational and physical resources with our sister organization, Engeye Scholars, which provides scholarships and seeks to meet the educational needs of the children of Ddegeya Village. Engeye Scholars was founded in 2009, and files combined taxes with Engeye Health Clinic.

2011 Summary

In 2011, Engeye received a total of $68,956 in donations, including $2,640 from the American Medical Women’s Association. Over $8,000 in laboratory improvements was made possible by a grant from the Ross Foundation. This does not include donations that were directed toward the Engeye Scholars Program. Engeye Health Clinic collected $21,464 in donations from patients seeking treatment in Ddegeya. Engeye recommends a donation of approximately $2.50 per patient visit, but provides medical care regardless of a patient’s ability to donate.

Engeye Health Clinic in Uganda spent $71,834 in 2011, including: $22,465 (31%) for pharmaceuticals and other clinic supplies including laboratory supplies; $12,435 (17%) for Ugandan staff salaries; $6,962 (10%) for clinic and laboratory supplies (including transport), clinic maintenance, and clinic licensing; and $29,972 (42%) for infrastructure improvements including a modern laboratory (12%) that was funded by the Ross Foundation and the completion of our first staff house (22%).

American organizational expenses were $1,349 including costs for processing donations, website maintenance, outreach, and wiring donations to Uganda.

Funding Our Future

As an ever-increasing number of Ddegeya citizens come to rely on Engeye for healthcare and education, we feel it is prudent to create a cash reserve sufficient to fund one year of clinic activities. After funding this cash reserve, our spending priorities for 2012 are to fund the construction of staff housing (which we believe is instrumental in recruiting staff). During 2012, we will be working on strategic plans that focus on (1) prevention and primary care, (2) outreach and education, (3) increasing clinic hours, and (4) developing sustainable businesses in Ddgeya. These strategic areas will guide our future funding goals. For further details on Engeye’s finances, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
