Engeye is a 501(c)3 non-profit that works to improve the lives of Ugandans through its affordable health clinic in Ddegeya Village, Uganda. Engeye also operates a scholarship program to empower the next generation of Ugandans. Founded in 2006, the clinic now sees approximately 15,000 patients per year and supports students through Engeye Scholars. MIT- EWB has had quite an introduction to importing goods to Uganda!  They brought solar panels with them to install on the roof tops of Engeye Clinic, but upon arriving in Uganda, realized they needed a book of paperwork regarding identification numbers for the clinic, none of which we had!  After several weeks of meeting with lawyers and traveling back and forth between Kampala, the airport and the village with Engeye's clinic manager, John, they are finally are succeeding.  Though they haven't physically obtained the solar panels quite yet, they are doing all the preparation for installation to ensure a speedy assembly once they are obtained.

The team from the Department of Emergency Medicine at University of Illinois at Chicago has arrived in the village and is already hard at work!  It is only 1pm, but already over 90 patients have been seen and many more are waiting.  Two of the team members are physicians with a degree in public health, who are advancing current needs assessment studies, while the rest of the team members are seeing patients in the clinic.

The newest team of Minerva Fellows, Sarah Yergeau and Eliot Harmon, arrived in Ddegeya on July 21 and have already begun work helping Engeye to manage the pharmacy and patient records. The team is taking a crash course in Luganda, working with the other teams on the ground and will continue initiatives previous fellows started, including the morning program and the women's craft project, Gyebelayko.

Architecture Design Team lands in Uganda and will stay for one month to assist with preparations for the building of upcoming staff housing.

Not only will the design team research sustainable building styles and explore innovative construction techniques, but they are preparing a landscaping blueprint to ensure responsible future clinic development.

Chicago Medical students arrive and will stay two weeks carrying out a maternal health needs assessment. Maternal health has been prioritized by Engeye as an area of concentration.
